Cirrus sits in the Never Summer Range between Lead Mountain and Howard Mountain at an altitude of 12,797', towering above the Lake of the Clouds, a popular west side destination. As most peaks in the Never Summer Range, the watershed from its east side is captured by the Grand Ditch, dug along its flank, to capture the water from the mountains and divert it from the Colorado River to the eastern plains.
It is one of several mountains in the Never Summer Range named for cloud forms in 1914 by James Grafton Rogers of the Colorado Geographic Board. Cirrus clouds are the feathery, thin wisps of clouds high in the atmosphere.#
